Divest Today

Starting today, and for the 7 days following, ordinary citizens from all matter of communities are standing up from the bottom as one - making their voices echo loud and clear at the top.

The Global Divestment Mobilisation 2017 is a project kick-started by 350.org which aims to "solidify the association between climate impacts and the moral urgency to divest from fossil fuels," as well as initiating the process of divestment in regions where it's not yet happened.
We know the climate is changing fast and we also know where the denials of man-made climate change are rooted. We know that the fossil fuel industry has spent whatever time and money it could on promoting climate denial, as well as channelling efforts to block climate action in order to secure their profits. The fossil fuel industry is strong. It's powerful and mighty but it does have a weakness and that weakness stems from its foundations - people.

The fossil fuel industry exists for the people. For our 'survival' and society. Those within the industries are merely people; they commute to work and vote in elections, just like you and I. Surely then we have a responsibility as citizens of the same corrupt society to make them recognise that we all live on the same planet? We all need to survive. This is our home and our home is not open for business.

350.org initiated the divestment campaign, but what is so evocative and gives this campaign meaning is that every single event, of the dozens that are out there, are all started by the people. Individuals who have decided for themselves that they are not satisfied with the way in which society runs today. These are people like you and I who have chosen to use their voice for what they feel is morally right. They want a brighter future and in simply signing their name to this campaign, have created a safer one.

One activist group getting out into the streets today is 'Fossil Free Stellenbosch,' from the University of Stellenbosch in Southern Africa. They are an activist group voluntarily run by students. They know that climate change will hit their continent hard and here they are standing up for the land they live on by pushing for fossil fuel divestment and looking to the future.
They are just one of the glimmers of optimism that can be spotted in this foggy world and I, for one, am proud to be a citizen of the world when I hear of people taking actions like this.

We all have a choice. What do we want to use our voice for? Are we going to use it at all or let it be silenced by those with power and money? We are all born to the same ever-changing society so we all should have a voice and let's use it to make change, securing the future that we yearn it to be.

Following in the footsteps of the history being made today, as people from Indonesia to Germany, Asia to South Africa all stand up no matter their race, gender or social-class, we can join the movement so that the future is secure for generations long after us.

To find out if there are any groups you can get involved in, or perhaps start one up yourself, click this link and use your voice to create a world you believe in.

Let's go #FossilFree!
